Blog Challenge: Sports Video Games

I have loved video games since I was a little kid. To be specific, sports video games. The seed was planted with NFL Football 94 Starring Joe Montana.

It was the first of many sports video games I spent countless hours playing.

My favorites inlcude...

Ken Griffey Presents Major League Baseball not only holds its own against pretty much every baseball game ever made, it might just do the same against any sports game. Creative player names, awesome music, players blowing bubbles with their gum while at the plate; what's not to like?

Insert any NHL video game here. Hockey games are a blast; always have been, always will be. My favorite though? NHL 2005. I played it non-stop.

I never played much Fight Night until I paid attention to boxing. But after only a few rounds of this game, it was hard to put the controller down. Especially against a buddy, this game gets intense.

The original NFL Blitz, the shortlived MVP Baseball series, NCAA Football, this list could go on for a long time. The point is, sports video games have always been a part of my life and are a lot of fun.

What I want to know is what is your all-time favorite sports game? Any console, any sport, any and every game. Which one, in your eyes, tops them all? Be sure to defend your answer. I want to know what makes it the best.

And since it's time for March Madness, I figured I would share this. An interesting bracket-style tournament that tried to determine the best sports game of all-time.

  1. NBA Jam best bball game of all time. Not only did the ball light the net on fire you could slam one home with a triple flipping dunk from half court.

  3. Track & Field. The original. It was a stand-up arcade game and was later released on NES - I actually saw it a year-and-a-half ago on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Dropped in 25 cents and slapped two buttons as fast and hard as I could for about 2 minutes. Man that was fun.

  4. Blades of steel.

Not only can you fight in the game, you get to play a spaceship flying during intermission. Awesome.

  5. Whilst Track & Field was quite entertaining with the NES mat for running on giant buttons, the best sports game of all time was Baseball Stars for NES. This was one of the first games to have memory to it which allowed some notion of team management. And there is still no better game moment than when you could release a player and he walks off into the sunset with his dog. Emotional stuff.

  6. While RBI Baseball is 1B for me, I must say that Baseball Stars takes it for me for one reason: a glitch in the game. I shed much blood, sweat and tears saving up that cool 1-2 million (against the Lovely Ladies since they gave the most...money) to buy the all-star player. When I finally bought the player, the game never reset my money amount so i constantly had enough to fill my roster with all all-star pitchers and hitters. And, the dynasty was born. Those damn All-Americans could hit still (especially "Hulk" from the cleanup spot).

Best FB game was Tecmo Bowl hands down.

  7. Here are my top 3 games in no order:

Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey Junior (btw I dare ANYONE to challenge me in this game).

Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey (97 is better than 98 though)

    NBA Hangtime

  8. Track & Field is an easy choice; especially since you could make a seamless transition into Duck Hunt or Super Mario Bros I w/o even having to change the Hardware in the Nintendo (you know the drill... Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean it followed by the correct sequence of blowing on the game & in the system in order to get the next game to work). I own the Triple Jump.

Techo Sports NBA bball (1992 version). John Starks (knicks) shot ~ 45% from three point land; Charles Barkely (sixers) somehow was a good 30% faster than any other player: MJ & the Bulls were unbeatable if the controller was in the correct hands (mine). We could have gotten through a whole season if the damn parents didn't insist on watching the news every night.

    RBI Baseball: Awesome.

I will now go to ebay to see if i can find an original Nintendo to buy

  9. Like a couple others have said, RBI baseball.

For regular Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Personally I liked Super Nintendo more. I still own it and yes, still play it.

I just remember the A's and Blue Jays being as unstoppable as Bo Jackson in Tecmo Bowl. Plus, you get to choose which field to play at: Wrigley, Busch, or the Sky Dome. And the music...nothing short of incredible. Good times.

  10. NHL '96

Nothing touches it to this date as far as hockey sims go. Sweet spots on both ends of the rink that made for automatic goals, the ability to skate backward to allow ferocious open ice hits, an innovative 'razzle-dazzle' move that defied physics (and paved the way for the 'schooling move' stick on next-gen systems' sports games), this game had it all. The ability to initiate fights by bumping into another player three times consecutively; the ability to line a player up from half the rink away and injure him with the titanic hit that follows... The list goes on. The ability to play by the rules or turn offsides off to play a bastardized version of hockey. I just can't stop naming amazing things about this game.

I retired from this game five years ago with an undefeated record. My last game was one of the worst showings of my career, a pathetic 9-3 victory over my friend Freddy. Sure, my Red Wings tripled his Boston team in their house... But I had allowed a hat trick to defensman Ray Bourque. Yes, Sergei Fedorov had six goals and two assists to Steve Yzerman (who assisted on four of Fedorov's goals) but when the three stars were shown and it wasn't a Red Wing sweep I realized something. So, very much unlike Brett Favre, I accepted that my skills were diminishing and rode gracefully off into the sunset.
